PBIS is a systems approach based on Hurlock Elementary School’s philosophy of recognizing the positive contributions of our students.  This is accomplished by establishing

  • clearly defined outcomes that relate to academic and social behavior
  • systems that support staff efforts
  • practices that support student success
  • data utilization that guides decision making

PBIS is a broad range of systemic and individualized strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behavior.

  • It is a proactive approach to school-wide discipline.
  • It is based on three levels of prevention:
    1. Primary
    2. Secondary
    3. Tertiary
  • It is a process that teaches the individual how to make the proper individual how to make the proper decision, plan their actions and how to solve problems constructively.
  • It has an instructional focus where emphasis is placed on
    1. teaching behavioral expectations
    2. teaching behavioral rules
    3. maximizing good instruction
    4. challenging students to succeed.
  • It uses data to guide intervention and management decisions that lead to
    1. warning
    2. removal from group setting
    3. loss of recess
    4. parent, teacher, administrator conference
    5. loss of in-school privileges (assemblies, parties, trips, special activities)
    6. after school detention ( parent to provide transportation)
    7. suspension
